I have had an Oscar in a 55 for 2 years now. A year ago some green/ brown algae started growing all over. I get most of it out when I do a weekly 50% water change and vacuum my gravel. It always comes back. I started turning my lights off when it got dark outside and turned them on when the sun comes up. This seems to slow the grow. About 6 months ago my water started to get cloudy. I have been trying to clear it up ever since. It is not ammonia. My water smells fine and I have even tested it with a chemical kit. It isn’t horrible cloudy, it just is missing that crystal clear water that makes me want to sit down and watch my Oscar. I really have tried everything. I have 2 AquaClears and an under gravel setup with a power head at one end and a strong air pump at the other. I have changed the media in the filters and still no luck. I don’t see what else I can do short of taking everything out of the tank and replacing the gravel and scrubbing the tank and getting new filter media. The whole 9 yards, basically a new tank. I really don’t want to have to do that because I don’t want to jam my Oscar in a bucket for 3 hours and have to go through a break in cycle with a dirty fish like a foot long Oscar. I’d suggest you have just reached the limits of what a 55gal tank can support.
If your Oscar has got to 12" long you have obviouly cared for it correctly, but the amount of waste it’s now producing is just too great for a 55gal. Even with good filtering nitrate builds up quickly, light + nitrate = algae.
Stripping the tank wont help, you will just put everything back the way it is, and things will carry on like they are. You just risk injuring the fish, or upsetting the tanks cycle and killing it.
You could try reducing the amount of light, you wont have plants in an Oscar tank, and the Oscar and see live just fine with normal room light levels. You could try increasing the water changes to twice a week and see if that help. Last resort, a UV steraliser may help reduce that free floating cloudiness.
