Inside a Stirling Engine Andy Ross Stirling Engine Kit Design

This is the Andy Ross engine that ran in the test. The Displacer piston popped loose so I did a video on the internal parts of the video. Bit long but detailed for engine builders.

lol, I know exactly what you mean about Fl. I live here too and I have to get the work done in the early morning hours. But I don’t have to water my garden everyday. ;) I finally got a video cam, just a cheap one, but I can now show you my place. I will attach a video for you to see.

    If you built a …
If you built a small tube drilled with a very small dremmal tool bent in a circle, and fit around the exaust pipe heated end, you could run it on propain, or any other goodheat sorce, Heck if you could build the heated end from copper pipe it would work even better for your solar stuff, or maybe even thick walled brass from the hardware store.

    So, Dan? Remember …
So, Dan? Remember the big compressor to stirling you had been working on?
Same proportionate scale, and pattern as this one. I bet you could use some scrap steel, and Automobile exaust tubeing to build a bigger copy of the little engines components, and then for the heat exchanger, some steel brake line with washers brazzed on as fins, and get the big one to run the same. Now having taken the little one apart? Do you see what I was saying before about the bigger one? The compressor pump?

do you think the higher temperatures in the engine combined with the high humidity in florida would weaken the bond the glue has created?

Hi , I do like watching your videos, this one was particularly interesting as most of us would never have the chance to see the insides of the engine. You are obviously interested in these engines yourself. You said you had this connected to a generator to test the power, all well and good. Have you been able to make any practical use of these engines, say to use sunlight to charge batteries?

I appreciate your video’s being an old shop tchr. Would you be able to use a micrometer and give us the Inside diameter and out side diameter of the displacer so we know what you mean by “loose, or 4 x as loose”? This would give us newbies a little bit of something to compare other Sterlings against what you have. – Many thanks, in advance.

    Have a nice… well… damp day :-)

Thanks for sharing Dan, looks like a nice little engine. Would love to make one like that someday. It looks so simple! What do you think: could making an engine like this be started of let’s say a 49cc 2 stroke engine? Just extend the cylinder make a long piston?

I bet you could get the O ring at the auto parts store. your going to have to find some glue that don’t melt in high heat. Its not thats called compression.

If the super glue fails you should silver solder it.
Any gunsmith should be able to do it and it would not fail again.

Also, what about using a small gas burner instead of sunlight?
In places like Alaska where it’s dark for months at a time and water isn’t always flowing there aren’t as many off the grid options.
