DIY – Home Solar Power Part #4 “Safety First Update”

Just an update to show that even though it’s good to have a solar backup system, it can also be dangerous if adequate safeguards are not in place. I’m on my 3rd inverter after my 2000 Watt (Continuous) Pure Sine wave inverter “burned” out on me when I plugged in a 1600 Watt household iron (it was the Shark brand iron). I thought it was 1500 Watts when making the video. Anyway, you would think that a 2000 Watt inverter could handle it,,, well no it didn’t. It didn’t even trip the overload protection in the inverter. Just literally burned out.

I’ve updated my system with 2 more batteries that will give me 440 amp hours, added some wood planks for more support on my shelf, a 60 amp breaker, and some small emergency lighting. Overall I believe this system will support my needs for a true emergency backup system providing hours of emergency power.

DIY Build a Solar Panel

My solar cells that I used to make the panel were 3.5A each and .5V each, so when linked in series the 36 solar cells that i used produce 3.5A and 18V, as voltage is additive in a series connection.

If you are thinking of building a solar panel, then try to use plexiglas or another type of glass that has very little reflection.

Additionally make sure you paint the panel itself black.

Everything above that I just discussed will help your panel produce as much electricity as possible.

Pool platform struts for blade arms. Door thresholds for blade stiffeners. Baby crib rail guides for blade control arms. Lawn tractor tie-rod ends for connectors of control-arms to blades. Large nails for hinge pins. 8′ of 2″ steel pipe for support pole and drive shaft housing. 10′ of 3/4″ steel pipe for drive shaft to Trans. Output was split to charge three different loads.
12 volts, 24 volts, 36 volts. 12v and 24v Charge into dual battery bank.
Two magnet layers “over-under”. Designed to operate from 2-10 mph.
Inner set of smaller blades will slow unit down when wind speed increases so unit will not spin at increased speed. ” tested A+ passed” The 5′ foot span adds torque to turn trans under load. The tail adjusts blades to wind pitch.
Used old portable drill press for coil-winder. Bicycle wheel. Light kit flange for bearing holder. Skateboard wheel bearings. Polycarbonate sheet for coil housing. Ford air breather top for Magnetic base.

Output from one coil at 2 mph = +5 volts.
Total output from all coils with no load at 2mph was +70 volts.
Output was split to charge three different loads.
12 volts, 24 volts, 36 volts.
Two magnet layers “over-under”.
Designed to operate from 2-10 mph.
